Summer in Mauritius

Mauritius has two distinct seasons, with summertime taking place from November to April. This time of year is characterised by warm, humid weather and temperatures ranging from around 25°C to 33°C. If you like it hot, this is a perfect time for your Mauritius holiday. Sea temperatures are also at their highest, making the summer months ideal for spending time in the water. It is worth being aware that summertime is when Mauritius experiences its cyclone season. This takes place from around January to March, with the island experiencing the highest rainfall and humidity. Although major storms are uncommon, they are not unheard of.

Winter in Mauritius

Winter in Mauritius lasts from May to October and while not as hot as summer, it is still a superb time for your holiday. With temperatures ranging from around 18°C to 27°C, it’s warm enough to enjoy relaxing beach days and hours unwinding by the pool. Additionally, with lower humidity and less rainfall it’s an ideal time for outdoor activities, sightseeing and exploring. Evenings during the winter months can also be cooler, so it’s well worth packing a warm jumper if you’re hoping to enjoy alfresco dinners.

The best time to visit the east coast of Mauritius

Laid-back hours poolside, heavenly beach days, golf in the sun and the natural beauty of spots such as Belle Mare and Île aux Cerfs are all waiting to be enjoyed on Mauritius’ glorious east coast. The best time for all of this is between October and December, when the weather is warm and you’ll be able to take advantage of favourable lagoon conditions. These months also experience less rainfall than during peak summer. If you’re planning a family holiday during the school summer holidays at home, the months of June to September offer plenty of sunshine. Temperatures are cooler during this time due to southeast trade winds. However, you can still enjoy days by the pool or on the beach, while the conditions are perfect for sailing and kitesurfing.

Mauritius holidays

The best time to visit the south coast of Mauritius

Adventure awaits on Mauritius’ dramatic south coast, where natural attractions such as Chamarel’s Seven Coloured Earth, Gris Gris Beach, the towering Le Morne Brabant and the island’s legendary underwater waterfall can be found. If taming this wild region tops your holiday agenda, then it’s best to plan your visit for between May and November. The temperatures and humidity during this time of the year make for ideal conditions to explore, while you’ll enjoy clear views of the breathtaking coastal scenery. If your visit is outside of this time, you’ll still be able to enjoy the spellbinding scenery, but expect the hot, humid conditions to make outdoor activities a little less comfortable than in cooler climes. You should also be prepared for rain.

The best time to visit the west coast of Mauritius

If you’re chasing the sun, it’s more than likely that you’ll catch it on Mauritius’ west coast. This side of the island is the place to be if you want the best chance of enjoying gorgeous beach weather whenever you choose to visit. This means that if work or school terms restrict when you can book your holiday, to be sure of sunshine you probably want to head west. During the winter months, from April to November, you’ll be treated to drier weather and less wind than you may find on the east coast. You’ll also be able to take advantage of calm seas and enjoy spectacular sunsets. In the summer, the west coast enjoys tropical conditions, with the hot days ideal for spending time at the beach. As well as relaxing on the sand, you can cool off in the sea, discover a colourful underwater world on a snorkelling expedition or set sail to spot dolphins.

Mauritius holidays

The best time to visit the north coast of Mauritius

With stunning beaches such as Grand Baie, Trou aux Biches, Pereybere and Mont Choisy, it’s easy to see why Mauritius’ north coast is one of the island’s most popular holiday destinations. The best time to visit these pristine sandy shorelines really depends on your plans when you get there. The summer months, from November to April, bring hot, tropical weather, and are perfect for hitting the beach, swimming, island-hopping adventures, snorkelling and scuba diving. The weather can be a little unpredictable during peak cyclone season, from January to March, but otherwise, this time of year only experiences the occasional heavy shower, most of which are short-lived. If you want to mix your beach time with a spot of sightseeing, the winter months, from May to October, may be a better option for your Mauritius holiday. You’ll still enjoy warm weather and sunny days, but the lower humidity means you can explore without feeling uncomfortable. For the very best conditions during this time, book your holiday between September and October when you can expect low rainfall and excellent sea conditions.
