The staff and location of the Grand Excelsior are they main reason I would recommend this hotel. The staff throughout the hotel are amazing, special mention to Maria who served us at dinner in the Admirals restaurant overlooking the harbour. The location is stunning, the hotel lobby and the areas overlooking the bay are fabulous. However, there is an air of faded grandeur in some areas of the hotel for example, our room was comfortable and well appointed but in need of an update. Would we stay here again ? 100%. The positives far outward the negatives and we look forward to a return visit.

I stayed recently to celebrate my birthday with my wife and friends from the moment we arrived we were made to feel special Janette made sure our rooms were together and that ours was decorated and had lovely flowers. Jordan who met us when we arrived looked after us, nothing was too much trouble even showing us a back way out of the hotel as a shortcut to the ferry. The hotel is in a great location the food is fabulous especially breakfast You do expect a certain level of service at a 5 star hotel but this was far better more personal and warm. If there were 6 stars for service this is it.

Large hotel with spacious, comfortable rooms. Generally good service from the staff although they could be more attentive in the bar lounge area to customers' needs. A short 8-minute walk up the hill to the main pedestrianised area of Valletta and all the restaurants and bars it has to offer.

A very nice hotel with very attentive and friendly staff. The 'night time' service where they bring you chocolates before bed was a lovely touch. One member of staff that really stood out to us was Xiying, who we talked to in the little gift shop by reception. She was very friendly and lovely, shared information about how and where the Maltese glass is made. She was very helpful. We felt welcome as soon as we stepped through the front doors, with the smiling staff bringing us welcome drinks. The hotel is huge, very clean everywhere. The rooms could have been a bit bigger as well as the balcony but still very nice and I understand this isn't something that can be changed easily so not too much of a complaint. The private beach was nice however cannot be walked on without shoes, so maybe could fill it with actual sand instead of stones. All round great place great breakfast great service.

I arrived in the evening, half an hour before the SPA closed so I paid 15€ and went to the steam room. You have to press a switch to activate the steam. The room smelled of dampness that has been there for decades. Like a towel that has never been properly dried and smells of humidity. And the seats are made of plastic. Not exactly what I imagined for a 5 star hotel. Then I wanted to call room service, put no one ever answered. I tired to call the reception, the concierge, but no one would answer the phone. I had to go down to the reception myself and they said the phones don’t work, so room service would call my room. You can’t make calls but you can receive them. Interesting concept. In the end I got what I asked for, and the burger was good. Bed was really comfy. Breakfast : not great, (don’t even bother with the powdered eggs, there’s a guy that makes proper eggs the way you want) and I had quite a lot of trouble finding the breakfast room, the place is so huge.
