I stayed at Mount Lavinia Hotel during my visit to Sri Lanka, for 3 days. The property is located at a very scenic location and it is a grand structure. The hotel retains its charms and is definitely fitting of its legacy. The receptionists were extremely well spoken and polite, and took into account my request for an early check-in. I was provided refreshing welcome drinks at the time of my arrival and I was escorted very warmly by the hotel staff to my room. My room was extremely large in terms of area with functional amenities and an amazing view of the ocean. The room was extremely comfortable and all toiletries were provided. The staff did a commendable job in making me have a relaxing stay. Would definitely recommend this property to anyone visiting Colombo.

I have been staying at Mount Lavinia since I was a child. Now at 35 I still continue to visit from the U.K. Situated on the beach, just outside of Colombo, sits the magnificent Mount Lavinia Hotel. The history, the people, the setting and the service is everything!! My last visit was in March 2026. We had the evening party before my wedding at Mount Lavinia. I must say this was absolutely spectacular it was actually better than my wedding day which I had elsewhere. We had a private party on the beach, the food was excellent, the organisation and execution was five star! As global event planner myself I was very impressed. Fire works, Kandy dancers, a band etc. nothing is too much trouble for Mount Lavinia hotel. A huge thank you to Mr Lal and Hareendra for all your efforts. A side from our event, our room was very large and spacious, clean, breakfast is always good, the terrace is the perfect place for a sunset too. Thank you Mount Lavinia Hotel. Such a beautiful, special place.

This was, without a doubt, one of the worst hotel experiences we had in Colombo. The service was disappointing from the moment we arrived. After a long journey, we requested a glass of water at check-in—a basic courtesy offered by most hotels. Instead, we were told, “Sir, you will be charged for it.” That set the tone for the rest of our stay. The room itself was poorly maintained, with both cockroaches and lizards present. Basic amenities such as coffee powder and creamers were missing, and every request had to be made through WhatsApp, where responses took an unreasonable amount of time. To make matters more confusing, the room contains what appears to be a telephone with reception and service numbers on it, but it is merely a decorative piece and not actually functional. The most disappointing part of our stay was the attitude of the staff. During breakfast, the food manager interrupted us regarding a booking issue that was ultimately caused by the hotel's own failure to maintain proper records. Instead of handling the matter professionally and discreetly, guests were inconvenienced and made to feel uncomfortable. We stayed at multiple properties across Sri Lanka during our trip, including several 4-star and 5-star hotels, and this was by far the poorest experience. Hospitality is about making guests feel welcome and cared for, and unfortunately, that was completely missing here. If someone offered me a free stay at this hotel, I would pay that person just to get out of it!

We were genuinely excited to stay at this hotel because of its rich history and reputation. Unfortunately, our experience was deeply disappointing from the moment we arrived. One wing of the hotel was under construction, yet this was never disclosed to us when we made our reservation. To make matters worse, we had to wait more than an hour past the advertised 2:00 p.m. check-in time before our room was ready. Having arrived after a workout and feeling exhausted, this delay was especially frustrating. When we were finally able to check in, the room floor was still wet from being freshly mopped, which gave the impression that the room had been rushed rather than properly prepared. The air conditioning was also inadequate and did little to keep the room comfortable. What disappointed us most, however, was the attitude of the staff. We did not feel welcomed or valued as guests. I was particularly interested in learning more about the hotel’s history, especially the famous Love Tunnel, but none of the staff showed any interest in sharing information or enhancing that aspect of the experience. We also observed what appeared to be a noticeable difference in the way some staff members interacted with white tourists compared to us. Whether intentional or not, this left us feeling overlooked and unwelcome, which was both upsetting and disappointing. Overall, this was a very disheartening experience. It’s sad to see a historic property like Mount Lavinia Hotel fall short of the standards one would expect from such an iconic destination.

"I recently stayed at the Mount Lavinia Hotel and was truly captivated by the location. It is a stunning, historically rich destination with so much heritage to explore inside the property. The atmosphere is perfect, and the food buffet is excellent—offering a wide variety of choices and great value for money. I also want to commend the staff, who remained friendly throughout my stay. ​However, there were some notable management and operational issues that impacted my experience. Most significantly, it took over five hours for our room to be provided with drinking water, which was quite frustrating. Furthermore, the maintenance of the room facilities was not at a satisfactory level, which is a shame given how beautiful the hotel itself is. ​I believe the reception and welcoming process could also be improved to match the caliber of the surroundings. The pool area was fine, but overall, while the location is perfect, the management needs to focus more on internal room maintenance and response times to ensure guests have a comfortable stay. I hope to see these operational aspects improved in the future."
