I have been staying at Mount Lavinia since I was a child. Now at 35 I still continue to visit from the U.K. Situated on the beach, just outside of Colombo, sits the magnificent Mount Lavinia Hotel. The history, the people, the setting and the service is everything!! My last visit was in March 2026. We had the evening party before my wedding at Mount Lavinia. I must say this was absolutely spectacular it was actually better than my wedding day which I had elsewhere. We had a private party on the beach, the food was excellent, the organisation and execution was five star! As global event planner myself I was very impressed. Fire works, Kandy dancers, a band etc. nothing is too much trouble for Mount Lavinia hotel. A huge thank you to Mr Lal and Hareendra for all your efforts. A side from our event, our room was very large and spacious, clean, breakfast is always good, the terrace is the perfect place for a sunset too. Thank you Mount Lavinia Hotel. Such a beautiful, special place.

This was, without a doubt, one of the worst hotel experiences we had in Colombo. The service was disappointing from the moment we arrived. After a long journey, we requested a glass of water at check-in—a basic courtesy offered by most hotels. Instead, we were told, “Sir, you will be charged for it.” That set the tone for the rest of our stay. The room itself was poorly maintained, with both cockroaches and lizards present. Basic amenities such as coffee powder and creamers were missing, and every request had to be made through WhatsApp, where responses took an unreasonable amount of time. To make matters more confusing, the room contains what appears to be a telephone with reception and service numbers on it, but it is merely a decorative piece and not actually functional. The most disappointing part of our stay was the attitude of the staff. During breakfast, the food manager interrupted us regarding a booking issue that was ultimately caused by the hotel's own failure to maintain proper records. Instead of handling the matter professionally and discreetly, guests were inconvenienced and made to feel uncomfortable. We stayed at multiple properties across Sri Lanka during our trip, including several 4-star and 5-star hotels, and this was by far the poorest experience. Hospitality is about making guests feel welcome and cared for, and unfortunately, that was completely missing here. If someone offered me a free stay at this hotel, I would pay that person just to get out of it!

I recently stayed at Mount Lavinia Hotel from 1st to 2nd May 2026. The food quality was very good, and we truly enjoyed the variety and taste of the dishes offered. However, there were a few areas that could be improved. At the buffet, some food items were not refilled once they were finished, which was a bit disappointing. In addition, the cleanliness of the surrounding areas was not up to expectations. The service level of the staff also needs attention. On several occasions, after we finished eating, our plates were not cleared unless we requested it, which affected the overall dining experience. On a positive note, the pool attendant was very attentive and responsible. He was always alert and even advised our child not to go into the deep end, which we really appreciated. Overall, while the food and poolside service were highlights, improvements in general service, cleanliness, and buffet management would greatly enhance the guest experience.

My stay at Mount Lavinia Hotel was one of the most disappointing hotel experiences I have ever had. The room was in a shocking condition. There were visible signs of fungus and mold in several areas, creating an unpleasant and unhygienic environment. The bathroom emitted a strong and persistent urine odor, making it extremely uncomfortable to use. Cleanliness throughout the property appeared to be a serious issue. The sofas in the lobby were dirty, stained, and felt sticky to the touch. Flies were noticeable in multiple areas of the hotel, including common spaces and dining areas, which further raised concerns about hygiene standards. The reception staff were unprofessional and unhelpful. Basic requests were met with indifference, and the overall attitude toward guests was far below what one would expect from a hotel that promotes itself as a premium destination. While the hotel benefits from a beautiful seaside location and historical significance, these positives were completely overshadowed by poor maintenance, inadequate cleanliness, and unsatisfactory customer service. I cannot recommend this hotel in its current condition and would strongly advise management to address these issues urgently if they wish to maintain their reputation.

Living on History Alone: A Grand Relic That Can No Longer Be Recommended My family and I recently stayed at Hotel Mount Lavinia and were allocated Rooms 252, 208, and 209.Unfortunately, what we experienced was one of the most disappointing hotel stays we have had in recent years. The hotel appears to be surviving almost entirely on its historical significance. While the building itself has charm and heritage value, the actual guest experience is far below what one would expect from a hotel of this reputation and price range. Our disappointment started at check-in. The front desk staff member who attended to us, Priyadarshani, was rude, dismissive, and appeared uninterested in assisting guests. First impressions matter, and the lack of courtesy and professionalism immediately created a negative impression. The rooms themselves were in a poor state. Upon entering, there was a strong musty odor, suggesting long-standing moisture and ventilation issues. The rooms felt old, neglected, and badly in need of refurbishment. While age and heritage can add character, there is a clear difference between historic charm and poor maintenance. The bathrooms were particularly unpleasant. They were not properly cleaned, and the shower curtains were blackened with visible mold and fungal growth. The condition of the bathrooms raised serious concerns about housekeeping standards and hygiene. To make matters worse, many of the basic amenities expected in even an average hotel room were missing. There were no complimentary water bottles, no toothbrushes, no tea or coffee sachets, and only a single bath towel was provided. We had to repeatedly contact housekeeping and guest services before some of these basic items were eventually delivered. Guests should not have to chase staff for necessities that should already be available upon arrival. The air conditioning was another major issue. The units produced plenty of noise but very little cooling. Despite running continuously, the rooms remained uncomfortable. A noisy air conditioner that fails to cool the room serves little purpose other than disturbing sleep. During our stay, there were several power interruptions. What was even more surprising was the apparent lack of a reliable backup power system. At times, the rooms were left completely dark, creating significant inconvenience and discomfort. For a hotel of this size and standing, this is unacceptable. The swimming pool was one of the few positive aspects of the property. It was well maintained and enjoyable to use. However, this positive experience was immediately overshadowed by the condition of the pool changing rooms. They were filthy, smelled strongly like a poorly maintained public toilet, and had cockroaches running around. The level of cleanliness was shocking and completely inconsistent with what guests would expect from a reputed hotel. Breakfast was acceptable and probably the only part of the stay that met expectations. There was a reasonable selection of food, and the quality was satisfactory. However, breakfast alone cannot compensate for the numerous shortcomings experienced throughout the rest of the stay. Overall, Hotel Mount Lavinia feels like an aging relic that has failed to keep pace with modern hospitality standards. Its historical importance is undeniable, but history alone cannot excuse poor maintenance, moldy rooms, dirty bathrooms, inadequate amenities, unreliable facilities, and poor customer service. Heritage should be preserved and celebrated, but it must also be supported by proper investment and management. Based on our experience in Rooms 252, 208, and 209, I cannot recommend this hotel to other travelers. There are many better hotels in Sri Lanka that provide cleaner accommodations, more professional service, and significantly better value for money. Hotel Mount Lavinia may have a remarkable past, but unless substantial improvements are made, it is difficult to see a strong present or
